SICE Telecomunicazioni: products for every Smart Road requirement

In view of the next edition of Traffic, scheduled to take place from 7 to 9 October 2026 at BolognaFiere, we are republishing the interview with Tommaso Cecchini, Head of the R&D Division at SICE Telecomunicazioni, conducted during last year’s edition.

“At Traffic 2025, we presented our Smart Road products, already deployed along the SS51, the first smart road in Europe, and on the E45. These solutions cover every possible need, enabling the exchange of information between vehicles and between vehicles and the road, with communications relating to accidents, weather conditions, maintenance, traffic and more. In a smart city context, this is particularly important in terms of safety.”

This is explained by Tommaso Cecchini, Head of the R&D Division at SICE Telecomunicazioni, a leading expression of Italian engineering applied to telecommunications and one of the world’s leading companies in the development and manufacture of telecommunications equipment, with more than one million devices produced.

Cecchini also highlights the possibility of managing traffic flows with a view to reducing pollution. However, it is essential to make municipalities and regional authorities understand the added value of the technology.

“Our offering is customised and scalable according to requirements,” Cecchini continues. “The ultimate goal is to provide a service to citizens, and we aim to cover all scenarios of interest to municipalities, emergency vehicles, Civil Protection and any road user. We are also involved in air traffic control, drone equipment, aerospace and defence.”

SICE Telecomunicazioni develops ATC systems for Leonardo and has developed bespoke solutions for Italy’s largest telecommunications companies. The Research and Development Division has always complemented its product catalogue with a design and engineering service tailored to individual customer requirements.

The role of IoT

“We have entered a world in which, thanks to the Internet of Things, the road has become an intelligent ecosystem and everything is being optimised for connectivity. Many sectors are involved, and this evolution has brought new players to the table. The Smart City must be a system that encompasses everything,” Cecchini explains. “The challenge is to make these different elements coexist, connect them, and create a network that makes the service accessible to everyone through the use of a shared European standard.”

According to Cecchini, the sector is set for enormous growth in the future, particularly once these systems are installed in all vehicles. However, broad and coordinated discussion among all stakeholders will be necessary to promote the widespread adoption of these solutions.

What was his impression of Traffic 2025?

“We are satisfied because we made many contacts, both at a commercial level and in terms of partnerships, and the number of visitors to our stand was high,” Cecchini replied. “There is a great deal of valuable Italian expertise in this sector, and our country needed a dedicated trade fair. At European level, there is Intertraffic in the Netherlands, which has been the sector’s leading biennial event since the 1970s. However, I believe that if Traffic is developed appropriately, it will have nothing to envy the Amsterdam event.”
